Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God?
Your are not your own; you were bought at a price.
Therefore, honor God with your body.
– 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Prescription for Peak Performance
Life would be simpler if your body was low maintenance. Think of how much free time you would have if you didn’t need that time-consuming eight hours of sleep. Balanced diet? You could eat chocolate bars morning, noon, and night – or nothing at all if your workload outweighed the need for a lunch break. And if you were in some unfortunate accident, you could just slap on an adhesive bandage and be back in business.
The physical body is a fragile gift that needs daily maintenance. Ignoring the care your body needs may save you time – at least at first – but it won’t simplify your life. A body that has been deprived of exercise, adequate sleep, a nutritious diet, and consistent dental care tends to break down more often. The few minutes you originally save by not flossing could result in hours in a dentist’s chair facing gum surgery. Most maintenance activities are a small price to pay, both in time and money, compared to the serious consequences that can result from putting your health in last place on your to-do list.
You only get one physical body in this life, and it is a gift. God gave you another gift as well – the privilege of free will. That free will allows you to choose how to maintain your body and soul. How you care for the life he’s given you is a reflection of how much you appreciate the sacrifice it took for him to offer it to you.
But your body is an incredibly complex creation, and there are countless tips on how to keep it healthy. Trying to follow them all could end up complicating your life. So stick to the basics. Get a good night’s sleep. Eat a balanced diet. Watch your weight. Exercise several times a week. Do what you can. Then put your physical health into God’s loving hands. He can take care of the details that are out of your control.
One Final Thought
Your physical body is a priceless gift – how you take care of it is your thank-you note to God
